Why We Do What We Do
With more than 28 years in law enforcement, Alan Montano has demonstrated leadership and effectiveness across a variety of roles. As Commander of the Maximum-Security Unit at the New Mexico Corrections Department, serious incidents were reduced by 30% over three years through implementing evidence-based conflict resolution and team training. While serving as a Sheriff’s Deputy with the Valencia County Sheriff's Office, Alan managed the Safer NM Grant which funds programs to combat traffic-related death and injury through education, prevention, enforcement, and engineering, resulting in a 20% decrease in DWI-related accidents countywide by leading targeted community education and enforcement initiatives. The experience as a Probation Parole Officer and facilitator for DWI Education has allowed Alan to guide first offenders toward rehabilitation, achieving a recidivism rate below the state average.
These accomplishments reflect a commitment to accountability, innovation, and measurable results. When asked why Alan wanted to be the Sheriff of Valencia County he stated simply, but passionately:
